A Distinction That Even Experts Often Get Wrong
We often hear people say they are going "trekking" or "hiking" interchangeably, but have you ever wondered if you are using the right term? Here, we break down the key differences between trekking, hiking, and simple trail walking.
What is Trekking?
The term "trekking" originates from South Africa and refers to long, challenging journeys. The word gained popularity among mountaineers traveling to the Himalayas to describe the long approach routes to the peaks they intended to climb. Because these mountains were located in remote areas far from civilization, expedition members had to carry all the equipment necessary to be completely self-sufficient.
Trekking involves varying degrees of difficulty depending on the duration of the journey and the complexity of the terrain. Generally, these routes do not have access to refuges or hotel accommodations. Therefore, it is essential to carry complete equipment, including—among many other things—a tent, sleeping bag, stove, high-calorie food supplies, and, if you are unfamiliar with the area, the support of an experienced local guide.
What is Hiking?
Hiking is a more relaxed outdoor activity. Although it can also vary in difficulty, hikes are usually conducted along well-marked trails or rural paths. These routes often offer the convenience of rest stops, mountain huts, or hotel accommodations along the way.
The primary goal of hiking is to connect people with nature and rural cultures. The necessary equipment for hiking is versatile and depends on the difficulty of the trail.
Key essentials include: a water bottle (with enough liquid for the duration of the hike), sun protection (hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen), comfortable quick-drying clothing and footwear, insect repellent, warm layers depending on the season, and a classic aluminum or lightweight wooden trekking pole.
