INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT NORCASIA 🤓
Norcasia is considered the youngest municipality in the department of Caldas. It has a total population of 6,374 inhabitants, which is why it is affectionately known as "the little girl of Caldas" (la niña de Caldas).
Located in eastern Caldas, it sits about 43 kilometers from La Dorada. It borders the municipality of Sonsón (Antioquia) to the north and the municipalities of Victoria and Samaná to the south.
This area is home to the La Miel Dam, fed by the Moro, La Miel, and Manso rivers, as well as the Santa Bárbara stream. Each of these tributaries has its own unique attractions.
Because many tours take place directly inside the reservoir, the weather rarely affects the navigability of the boats.
HOW TO GET TO NORCASIA? 🗺️
If you don't have your own vehicle and want to travel by bus, here are some options to get there on your own:
-> FROM MANIZALES TO NORCASIA:
- Coopuertos: Travels directly to Norcasia every day at 1:30 p.m. The ticket costs roughly $55,000 COP. This company also travels to La Dorada, Caldas, departing every hour from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The Manizales - La Dorada trip takes 5 hours and costs $35,000 COP. Phone: 3162714173
- Rápido Tolima: Departs every day at 3:00 p.m. directly to Norcasia. The ticket price is $45,000 COP. Phone: 3153914211
-> FROM OTHER MAJOR CITIES TO NORCASIA:
- From Medellín to La Dorada: The ticket costs approximately $52,000 COP. Companies like Rápido Ochoa, Expreso Brasilia, and Coomotor offer this service. The journey takes about 6 hours.
- From Bogotá to Norcasia: The ticket costs around $50,000 COP. Coopuertos offers direct routes to Norcasia. The trip takes close to 6 hours with departures at 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.
- From Cali to La Dorada: The ticket costs roughly $115,000 COP. Expreso Brasilia runs this route, and the trip takes about 11 hours.
Tip: Bus schedules can change, so we highly recommend calling the companies directly to confirm.
-> FROM LA DORADA TO NORCASIA:
Since we were traveling by motorcycle, we took the Honda - La Dorada road. Along the way, we had a surprise: about a kilometer before arriving, we noticed all vehicles drastically slowing down to 40 km/h 😅.
It was an abrupt change on a fast, dual-carriageway road. Some of us overtook cars, slightly exceeding the 40 km/h limit. Drivers flashed their lights at our friends trailing behind to warn them, but we didn't get the memo. We are telling you so it doesn’t happen to you!
🚨 Crucial travel tip: On the way back along the same road towards Honda, on the opposite lane, there are at least two speed cameras (fotomultas). If you drive this route by motorcycle or car, keep your eyes wide open and respect the speed limits at all times.
After passing through La Dorada with the bitter taste of a potential speed ticket 😅, we took the road to Norcasia. From La Dorada, it's approximately 45 kilometers. The road is paved, but drive carefully as there are some potholes.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION BEFORE YOU ARRIVE:
- The mobile operator with the best coverage in the area is Claro, but be patient as the signal is highly intermittent.
- Keep in mind that it is a small town with very few bank correspondents or ATMs. During the high season, it is difficult to find a place to withdraw cash, so we highly suggest bringing enough cash with you.
TOP THINGS TO DO & TOURIST ATTRACTIONS IN NORCASIA, CALDAS 🛵🚤
Below, we highlight some of the most iconic places in Norcasia. At the end of this post, we will share a recommendation that, although not exactly in the municipality, is very close and absolutely worth it.
-> LA MIEL RIVER (RÍO LA MIEL)
To reach the starting point for our navigation, it took us 42 minutes by vehicle from the main square of Norcasia. The route combines a well-maintained road with some unpaved sections, so we recommend a vehicle with decent ground clearance.
This river is the absolute star of the area. It is no coincidence that the reservoir shares its name, as it is the main water source that powers the turbines of the Miel I Hydroelectric Plant.
Beyond its significance, it is the perfect setting for body rafting, an activity that allowed us to float down its waters for several kilometers, letting the current carry us. It is undoubtedly one of the best adventure experiences in Caldas, perfectly blending the force of nature with a healthy dose of adrenaline.
-> LA CLARA WATERFALL (CASCADA LA CLARA)
From Norcasia's main square to La Clara Waterfall is roughly an 8.5-kilometer drive. It took us about 20 minutes, and the road was in excellent condition.
We left our transport there and began a 500-meter walk along a trail (about 10 minutes). At the end, we had to cross a small stream and hike up to stand face-to-face with the majesty of the waterfall.

Note: If you are in your own vehicle and it's not high season, you can ask for permission at the house near the entrance to park your vehicle safely.
-> AMANÍ RESERVOIR (EMBALSE DE AMANÍ)
At the Amaní Reservoir, you will find a wide variety of activities, as it is a body of water spanning approximately 50 kilometers. Here you will find waterfalls, excellent fishing spots, and attractions like Waterloo Waterfall, one of the largest and most impressive in the reservoir.
This reservoir is fed by the following rivers:
- La Miel River: The backbone of the reservoir and the primary engine for generating electricity.
- Manso River: Famous for its crystal-clear waters.
- Moro River: A visual spectacle known for its turquoise waters.
- Santa Bárbara Stream: A smaller, yet equally charming tributary.
Note: Most tourist agencies only take you to the dam wall to tell the history of the place. It's a quick tour that ignores the true magnitude of the reservoir. Discovering its deepest corners and reaching waterfalls like Waterloo requires a 4 to 5-hour boat ride.

-> RESERVOIR VIEWPOINTS (MIRADORES)
The viewpoints are located just a 10-minute motorcycle ride from the town. The road is in very good condition.
We visited two viewpoints in the area we were exploring, but locals tell us there are many more scattered around. From these high vantage points, you can appreciate the immense reservoir and the imposing mountains that surround it. The perfect spot for photography!
-> MANSO RIVER (RÍO MANSO)
To get to this river, we drove for about 20 minutes (roughly 12 kilometers from Norcasia's main square). The road was in perfect condition.
Upon arrival, we found a safe spot to park our motorcycles before heading down to enjoy these beautiful crystal-clear waters.

Important safety note: Although this river looks very calm from the shore, it has deep sections and strong underwater currents. Unfortunately, two people who visited independently drowned here after getting trapped under a submerged tree. Always travel with caution, and whenever possible, go with a local guide!

-> THE RIGHT CLOTHING
The average temperature in Norcasia ranges between 20°C and 29°C (68°F - 84°F), and the climate is quite humid. We recommend packing the following items if you plan to hike or visit the rivers:
- 👟 Safe footwear: Use shoes with a good grip. Avoid smooth soles, as you will need to walk over highly slippery rocks near waterfalls and rivers.
- 🏃♂️ Comfortable clothing: We recommend lycra or quick-dry clothing to make hiking much easier and cooler.
- 🩱 Waterproof gear: Bring a swimsuit or a change of clothes—you will get wet!
- 🦟 Sun and insect protection: Long-sleeved shirts (preferably with UV protection) are extremely helpful to shield you from the sun and mosquitoes. Don't forget a good hat or cap.

- 🤫 Seek tranquility: If you prefer quiet travel and dislike crowds, try to avoid long weekends (puentes festivos in Colombia).
- 🏧 ATMs and cash: As mentioned, ATMs are scarce in Norcasia. Bring enough cash from your city of origin to avoid issues.
- 📶 Signal and maps: Mobile networks can get overloaded, so download offline maps and important info before you arrive.
- 📅 Book in advance: If traveling during the high season without prior reservations, it is highly likely you won't find spots in hotels or tours.
- 🏍️ Road safety: If driving, remember to watch out for speed limits and the speed cameras (fotomultas) as you approach La Dorada.
⚠️ IMPORTANT SAFETY NOTE: When participating in water activities like body rafting, avoid wearing sneakers with long laces or accessories that can easily tangle in submerged branches or rocks. For safety, we suggest quick-adjust water shoes or closed-toe hiking sandals.
